During my second 125cc motorcycle road trip across Madagascar—which was infinitely less complicated than the first one (you can read the story of that journey on the blog)—I met two extraordinary people, Nico and Dom.
We first crossed paths on the ferry from Nosy Be to Port Ankify. They are true lovers of this magical country. Having lived there for many years, they organize traditional pirogue excursions far from the crowds of mass tourism. We immediately hit it off and exchanged phone numbers.
That evening, after arriving in Ambanja, they invited me to join them for a drink at a small bar. It was supposedly easy to find: “Just ride all the way through town to the south—the bar is right after the bridge!”
Naturally, as any self-respecting Parisian would, I arrived late. Night was already beginning to fall.
To make matters worse, I rudely abandoned them for a few minutes so I could take this photograph...
Darkness falls incredibly quickly in Madagascar, and I couldn’t afford to wait if I wanted to capture the colors of the setting sun! During Cyclone Gamane, almost every bridge between Port Ankify and Diego-Suarez collapsed, but the bridge in Ambanja held firm—and that’s a very good thing!
