Leaving Ke-Ka-Sha

One night in Ambilobe, just after leaving the Ke-Ka-Sha restaurant. It is not particularly late, yet the streets are already almost deserted. Life is not always easy in this agricultural region; people work hard and go to bed early. Two teenagers emerge from the darkness and walk towards me. Their silhouettes are outlined like shadow puppets in the glow of the streetlamp they have just passed. In the distance, a tuk-tuk speeds through the intersection. It takes a certain degree of driving skill to weave through these small streets at night, with piles of rubble scattered along the way.
I have a great deal of affection for this small town, where time sometimes seems to have stood still. It is time for me to carefully climb back onto my little motorcycle and head for bed, but first, one last photograph: click! That is the nature of photography: there is no before and no after. Just a cinematic image, a frozen film in which the viewer is free to imagine what has just happened, or what might happen next.
